Dismantling of three modern vehicles to identify PM parts

In order to establish a better understanding of the use of PM components in modern automobiles, a team of engineers from Höganäs AB recently stripped back three new vehicles to their component parts.

As well as discovering the exact content of PM in each vehicle, the team were able to identify numerous components that could easily be converted to PM.

Anders Flodin, Application Development Manager at Höganäs AB, reports on the findings of the project.

The changing landscape of carbonyl iron and nickel powder production

SEM image of carbonyl nickel powder produced by the Jinchuan Group

Until recently, much of the global production of carbonyl metal powder was centred on manufacturers in Europe and North America. Although China has produced these powders since the 1960s, the last ten years or so has seen a rapid increase in the volume of both carbonyl nickel and carbonyl iron powders produced in this region.

In this report, Jun Shu and Lou Koehler describe the production processes and look at the changing landscape of carbonyl metal powder production.

Powder Metallurgy components are today relied upon by a wide variety of manufacturing industries, from the automotive to power tools, household appliances, chemical engineering, filtration and more.

The main reason for the technology’s success is its cost-effectiveness at producing high volumes of net-shape components, combined with its ability to allow the manufacture of products that, because of the production processes, simply cannot be manufactured by other methods.

To discover more about how the technology has revolutionised component production, browse our Introduction to Powder Metallurgy. You can also download past issues of Powder Metallurgy Review magazine in PDF format from our archive, offering unrivalled insight into the technology and its applications.
