ScoreSense to repay $22 million to consumers duped by free credit score offer: Plain Dealing
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- ScoreSense will pay $22 million to settle charges that it offered consumers free credit scores, then socked them with monthly fees for credit monitoring.
Most of settlement money -- $21.9 million -- will be refunded to consumers.
ScoreSense is owned by One Technologies. The Texas-based business is operated by MyCreditHealth and ran at least 50 websites, including FreeScore360.com, FreeScoreOnline.com, and ScoreSense.com.
The company advertised heavily online. A typical ad read, "View your latest Credit Score from All 3 Bureaus in 60 seconds for $0!"
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine joined the Illinois attorney general and the Federal Trade Commission in filing a lawsuit that accused ScoreSense of luring consumers with promises of free credit scores. Consumers who tried to get their "free" scores were unwittingly enrolled in credit monitoring programs that cost $29.95 a month, the suit said.
More than 210,000 consumers complained about the unexpected charges to their banks or consumer agencies.
The government's lawsuit against the company said that although it added disclosures to its site about the charges, they weren't prominent enough for consumers to notice.
One Technologies said it believed it had adequately disclosed terms to consumers but agreed to revamp those disclosures. "The changes announced today largely involve the location and frequency of notices to consumers about the terms of the free trial offer," the company said in a statement.
Under the settlement, ScoreSense will not enroll anyone in paid programs unless they check an opt-in box or sign a signature line to be enrolled in a paid program. Additionally, before ScoreSense can bill consumers, it must send them information about its programs, charges and the terms.
Under the settlement, it also must make it easy for customers who change their minds to cancel.
Consumers who were billed but who have not contacted the Ohio attorney general's office or the FTC should file a complaint with one of those agencies to make sure they will be covered by the settlement.
File a complaint with the Ohio attorney general's office at http://www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov/about-ag/file-a-complaint.aspx or by calling 1-800-282-0515.
The agencies share complaints, so you only need to file with one agency.
Be wary of websites that offer free credit scores. They often require you to share a lot of personal information to receive a score and many stick consumers with hidden charges.
The three credit bureaus are required to give you your free credit report -- but not a free score -- once every 12 months. When you order your credit report through their shared, official service, annualcreditreport.com or 1-877-322-8228, you'll get the chance to order your score for a nominal fee once you've made sure the information on your reports is correct.
Do not sign up for credit monitoring to get your score or see your a credit report.
You usually get a look at your score for free if you ask a lender when you apply for credit or open a checking account.
